Aminaka Wilmont

Inspired by numerous architects, Aminaka Wilmonts’ s/s 09 collection is one of sharp angles, steel greys and linear construction. Last year’s Fashion Fringe winners decided to ‘peer through the esoteric eye of Jean Nouvel, Richard Rogers and Frank Gehry’ to imagine how their ideal woman would look.

So, supposing these great architects like their women as they like their building design, there are stiffened grey cotton dresses to represent the rigidity of cement, sheer chiffon to capture the translucency of glass and a more literal reference with a digital print that looks like an abstract birds eye view of a city.

We’re certainly not looking through the eye of trained architects but we liked what we saw. The foundation of the whole collection is the leather; segmented jackets with jagged hemlines and sleeves like those from a suit of armour. With a clean, sleek silhouette your eye is drawn to the details: pleated leather collars worked into delicate silk, leather necklines holding up layers of chiffon, spider webs of zip necklaces; it’s all about the flourishes. Fashion Fringe sure knows how to pick ‘em.
