Avsh Alom Gur
Wed, 17/09/2008 - 10:15am Vauxhall Fashion Scout “When assembled the lines and the organization of the separate elements lead to the basic necessities: the two front legs – in a soft outward curve, their grace and elegance stabilises more than just visually…” And so it was the chair, in all its glory, that provided Avsh Alom Gur with inspiration for his s/s09 collection. Appearing in abstract prints and as doll-furniture sized earrings, the day-to-day object that most of us appreciate in function rather than form found its way onto the catwalk. The utilitarian nature of the chair translated into utility-wear re-imagined; sheer jumpsuits, aprons and umbrellas all made an appearance. Quirky, household furniture references didn’t impair the beauty of the clothes. Elegant chiffon gowns in powder blue literally floated along the catwalk and silky, tactile fabrics leant an equal dose of luxury to the surreal theme. The linear chair print appeared in various guises: diaphanous dresses, silk blouses and jumpsuits in vivid reds and blues; full prom skirts paired with knotted blouses are just one ponytail away from fifties diner girl adding a flirty feel amongst the more grown-up eveningwear. Save the beautifully cut clothes, Avsh Alom’s speciality is his unique sense of humour, which threads itself through his collections. This frivolous, fun streak (in addition to his high profile second job as Ossie Clark designer) is what saw the Vauxhall Fashion Scout full-to-the-brim with expectant faces that didn’t go away disappointed.
