Sun, 14/09/2008 - 10:30am Vauxhall Fashion Scout, Baden Powell House, SW7 Spijkers en Spijkers is the first of this seasons’ shows at the Vauxhall Fashion Scout and their signature blend of naughty versus nice kicked off proceedings with a sultry mish-mash of leopard print and lace.
Peek-a-boo fashion is nothing new; sheer fabric revealing more than us mere mortals like to share, but the Dutch twins design risqué garments to a tee. Prim, high-neck dresses worthy of a Stepford Wife feature tantalising see-through panels unleashing a flash of thigh and seemingly decent summer dresses are left undone one button short of indecent exposure. The frou-frou frills and candy-like colours, not to mention waves worthy of Boticelli, save the dresses from heading to the wrong side of trashy.
One thing to be sure of at a Spijkers show is that they know how to give good collar. Origami folds of black organza create a trompe l’oeil effect and have become their unique selling point from season to season, sitting bold against their evolving designs.
Despite sticking to a tried and tested formula for some of the show there was the welcome addition of fluid kaftans in icy green or faded fuchsia and a stiffened mother of pearl organza dress with sweet wrapper like ruffles to the Spijkers repertoire.
