yahoo.jp my brother!
I'm scared by all those fakes.
I've been lucky enough to visit the goro store 2/3 times in my life and they never gave me any receipt etc, so it's pretty hard to realize what is original and what is fake, if you don't trust the seller 1000%, and reselling prices now are simply…. INSANE? 10.000 Euro for a gold feather? really?!?
When I was in the process of getting all my goros stuff in 2013 stylistics sent me this. I ended up getting my initial chain and feather from boo-bee and then added a few pieces to it from the store in Japan each time I visited.
“Buying Goro's is exactly like buying a Rolex in a lot of ways (although luckily a bit cheaper). Unless it comes from the actual shop or a trusted resale shop, it's best to assume it's fake. There are tons of fakes out there and most wouldn't even be recognizable unless you knew what you were looking for and could see them in person and weigh them. With that said, anything that comes from an auction or an individual seller is something you should steer clear from if you really want the real thing. Have a look at sites like Stay246.jp or Boo-Bee.jp. They're two of the only sites I'd trust completely for resale. Their prices aren't cheap, but for resale, those are the going rates and anything much less than that should be an automatic red flag. Ultimately, the best would be to come to Japan and make the pilgrimage to the shop. I know that's not the easiest option, but if you're truly interested in getting into Goro's, that's the ultimate.
Not to sound harsh, but if you admittedly don't have any clue what you're looking for, it might be best to do some research before jumping into it. Get the Goro's books (vol. 1 and 2) for starters and get familiar with the types of pieces, both new and old. There's too much to Goro's for me to just tell you and it'd just help you grow your interest anyways if you spent some time researching it yourself. And if you just want something that looks like Goro's, there are a lot of other similar brands (i.e. Tady & King) that will give you the same look without all the worry/hassle of hunting down authentic pieces.
Wait it out and you'll thank yourself in the end! Or do as I did and buy your first piece off YJP and constantly doubt wether it's real or not. I remember going the shop a couple of times after and taking my piece off and hiding it in my pocket before going in as I was terrified the staff would spot it and call me out in it not being authentic. Since then, with the exception of one piece from Stay246, I've only purchased from the shop. Not to sound like a hippie, but it has made each piece I bought that much more special and they each have stories associated with them.
Oh, and the first piece I bought did turn out to be a fake so I took it off my chain and put it on my keyholder…which I then lost a week later. I think that was a sign from above that there's no place for fakes! haha
I kind of said it jokingly at first, but it really is no different than buying a Rolex. There're tons of different styles, different details, different ages, and tons of fakes. So unless you know exactly what you want and are ready to drop some decent money on the real deal from a reputable source, there's no point throwing money in blindly and getting something you'll only regret later. Not to mention, something that'll be worthless in the future if it is indeed fake. As was the case with my 40k yen mistake a few years back.
Hope that helps a bit…happy hunting!”
